windows concurrency

Detailed description
Logging on windows seems to cause errors; logging to files helps.

Fundamental issue: slog should be reentrant? Suppose vslog does a file operation that gets intercepted, and then there's
another log output...
Note on windows interception not compiled in.

Adding locking around the body of vslog helps, but there seem to be other related problems...
